"I think that many of your readers dream of building their own home, but for various reasons think that it would be out of reach (fear of architects, contractors, going over the budget, and the like). I would love the opportunity to show that with a modest budget a sense of adventure, and a responsive, creative design-build team, it can be a fun and fulfilling reality!"

Basic Services for Design/Build Projects:

• Schematic design/rough sketches:
Preparation of a series of sketches in response to program.

Universal Design and Aging in Place Solutions
What is Universal Design and Aging in Place?
Universal design incorporates principles of designing and building homes that are comfortable for all and accommodate people with varying levels of functionality. The home is set up to serve it’s inhabitants when they are healthy, or when they may be temporarily sick or injured. Universal design applications serve people with disabilities, mobility problems or impaired senses and also accommodates people as they grow older so that they may stay in their home much longer than may be possible with traditional spaces.
Aging in Place Specialists help to ascertain needs, and design and/or remodel to accommodate changing physical needs so that people can stay in their homes as they age. This makes sense from an emotional as well as practical point of view. Many people would like nothing more than to stay independent in their own homes, but find it difficult and unsafe with increased challenges. The home environment can be altered to support people who desire to stay in their own homes. From a financial perspective, theoretically, an assisted living facility may cost $60,000 per year. A renovation of space may cost $60,000, but would allow people to stay home potentially for years.
Some standard features of Universal Design:
• No-step entry or ability to ramp to the door if need be.
• One-story living. Even in multi story homes, there is a place to eat, use the bathroom and sleep all located on one level, which is barrier-free.
• Wide doorways which make it easy to move furniture also will accommodate a wheelchair uf ever required.
• Wide hallways feel and look better, and are useful for moving things and wheelchairs.
• Extra floor space in each room for movement and wheelchair turning.
• Provide blocking for future handrails, adjustable closet rods and the like.
Whether building new or remodeling, we can create homes that change with you, allowing you to live independently, safely and comfortably.
In construction, the words ‘Green’ and ‘Sustainable’ are used to describe design and building practices that promote the economic health and well being of families, the community, and the environment.
Our company has long valued site-specific, environmentally sensitive design solutions, so with the advent of the Green Building Program, it was natural for us to join its ranks, becoming Certified Green Build Professionals. Our projects are characterized by the use of renewable materials, orientation of the home to the sun, best use of natural light and ventilation, provision for future energy efficient elements, and care for existing environmental conditions.
With ever increasing climate and energy concerns and costs, many of our clients have come to realize that it will be cost effective to follow their desire to support a healthier environment and future by utilizing green and sustainable practices, materials and equipment in their new homes and remodels. We are ready to help clients choose environmentally supportive systems to whatever extent they feel they are willing and able.
Green Building is the construction standard for the future and the smart solution for today.
With most of us spending more than 90% of our time indoors, utilizing healthy home building practices is common sense choice for a better life. As it now stands in traditional construction, our indoor environment is often far more polluted than outdoors due to noxious building materials, inadequate lighting, and a variety of other variables. According to EPA reports, the air in new homes can be up to ten times more polluted than outside air due to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other chemicals used in paint and other product manufacturing. However, homes that follow healthy home building guidelines use healthier building materials, and adhere to stricter gas emission and ventilation requirements improving the quality of a home's indoor environment. Some examples of healthy home elements include:
*Low VOC finish materials
*Passive air flow and fresh air
*Isolation of spaces where combustibles and toxic materials exist
*Encapsulation and conditioning the air of crawlspaces
*Reduction of exposure to chemicals by careful selection of materials
*Reduction/elimination of environments that support rot, mold, and mildew
*Energy efficiency which reduces need for mechanical heating and ventilation
*Use of environmentally friendly materials that are also 'green' ('green' and 'healthy' are not always inclusive)
The benefit of following Healthy Home Guidelines are higher quality homes that are more comfortable, safer, quieter, and require less maintenance. They are also more durable, and incur lower monthly operating costs!
